New holder of the Van Eesteren Fellowship

As of 15 September 2019, Caroline Newton will be the holder of the Van Eesteren Fellowship (formerly the Chair) at TU Delft.

Caroline is an architect, urban planner and political scientist. She has a PhD in (social) geography from the K.U. Leuven.

Her work focuses on the socio-spatial aspects of design and critical spatial practices in Europe and the South. Her research interests lie mainly in the connection between social processes and the built environment.
Caroline has a very broad field of interest and she has worked on various topics such as (informal) housing, design and planning in postcolonial settings, participatory design and participatory redevelopment, but also on the challenges (methodological and pedagogical) of knowledge production through design research. The role of the urban environment in (socio-ecological) transition processes and the spatial embedding of a circular economy are challenges she looks at from a social (and spatial) justice perspective.
Furthermore, she has also written about the integration of the physical and virtual worlds and their role in architecture and architectural education.

Caroline is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Housing and the Built Environment and is an expert (socio-spatial planning) on the GECORO (Municipal Commission for Spatial Planning) of the city of Mechelen in Belgium. She is a visiting professor at the faculty of architecture of the K.U. Leuven.
She teaches a.o. participatory design and participation processes, socio-spatial planning, critical urban theory, design studios in architecture and urbanism.
