Désirée van Hoek, Amsterdam

Photo documentary 'A Note on Downtown' (working title)

This study is the result of a twelve-year photographic investigation into the gentrification and segregation of downtown Los Angeles by photographer Désirée van Hoek. The photographic research focuses on city planning, urbanism and architecture. The project wants to contribute to the mapping of possibilities to adjust and influence processes of gentrification and segregation. It examines how urban planning and architectural design affect these processes. The study will be the subject of an exhibition in The New Institute in the spring of 2022, and will also appear in book form around that time.
