The EFL evening lockdown list

The days are dark, cold and now that the Netherlands is (partly) locked up, also short. To defy this evening lockdown, we at EFL have compiled a nice selection of viewing and listening tips. This way, you can entertain and educate yourself during the winter days.

1. EFL Fellowship Lecture series
The Van Eesteren Fellowship is an initiative of the EFL Foundation, which is currently implemented with the Van Eesteren Fellowship Lecture series led by Caroline Newton. The fellowship series focuses on design-related research and the power of design to investigate metropolitan issues and subsequently transform them into future-oriented solutions. The lecture series, which can be viewed online, brings to light various urban design issues with a focus on making the city more sustainable.

2. Podcast Messages from the Metropolitan Area episode 7, Hilde Blank
In this podcast series Theo Baart discusses with designers, policy makers and publicists remarkable things he has seen during his trips through the Metropolis. This series is the sequel to his book Groot-Amsterdam//Metropool in ontwikkeling. In episode 7, he talks to Hilde Blank, chairwoman of the EFL Foundation and director/owner of BVR consultants for spatial development. As an urban planner, Hilde is involved in the development of various regions and cities in the Netherlands. For example, she led a workshop on the future of the eastern flank of Haarlemmermeer. Together with her discussion partners, she developed a perspective for this remarkable area, which at the time had the character of a collection of residual spaces created by other types of development. Where are the opportunities for this strategically located area?

3. Video opening JVB EXPO
The official opening last summer of the JVB EXPO, a graduation project by TU Delft student Hanna Rudner captured on film. The JVB Expo is an exhibition on collective living in the student complex at the Jacoba van Beierenlaan in Delft. Architecture, the everyday life of the individual and the various ways of collective living in a student complex are highlighted, a project that the EFL Foundation is advocating.

4. Audio tours full of architecture in Amsterdam and beyond
One way to make a walking tour more enjoyable is with an audio tour about the architecture you pass. Check out Arcam's compilation of the five favourite audio tour providers, with a library full of audio stories. The focus of the list is Amsterdam, but you'll also find something to enjoy outside the capital.

5. Film At Home in the City. 100 years of Tuindorp Oostzaan

This film by Remy Vlek was made in the year of the celebrations of 100 years of Tuindorp Oostzaan in 2021 and deals with the history and the big changes that the garden village went through. Tuindorp Oostzaan is the first Tuindorp in the Netherlands and was mainly intended for the workers of the NDSM wharf that was also established at the beginning of the 20th century. The film is about the history but especially the gentrification (social mixing of different population groups) in Tuindorp Oostzaan, which manifests itself in frequent sales of houses from the social housing stock that was traditionally high in Tuindorp Oostzaan. The gentrification leads to tensions between old and new residents but also to a new challenge in how people deal with each other.

From 7 December 2021 to 13 February 2022, the film Dorp in de Stad can be seen in the Film Hall of the Amsterdam City Archive and will also be broadcast on television.
